Long horizontal wall art in a 3:1 format
Panoramic wall art is three times as wide as it is tall. That shape fills the long, low space above a bed, a sofa or a mantel, where a standard print looks small. Our panoramic art prints reproduce vintage paintings, most of them from the 19th and early 20th centuries. For long thin horizontal wall art on a narrow wall, start with 8 × 24. For large horizontal wall art over a king bed or a long sofa, choose 16 × 48 or 20 × 60.
Panoramic sizes
Every panoramic print comes in the same four sizes. The last column uses a common guideline: art should span about two thirds of the furniture below it.
| Size | Suits furniture about | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 8 × 24 in | 36 in wide | twin bed, console table, dresser |
| 12 × 36 in | 54 in wide | full or queen bed, loveseat |
| 16 × 48 in | 72 in wide | king bed, 72-inch sofa |
| 20 × 60 in | 90 in wide | 84 to 96-inch sofa, sideboard |
A 12 x 36 horizontal wall art print is the most flexible size. It fits a full bed, a dresser or a small mantel. A 20 x 60 horizontal wall art print is our largest, made for a long sofa or an open wall.
Where to hang long art
Over a bed, center the print on the headboard and leave 6 to 10 inches between them. Above Bed Wall Art has calm subjects and a size chart by bed. Over a sofa, keep the same gap above the sofa back. Wall Art Above Couch has bolder color for living rooms. Over a fireplace, keep the art narrower than the mantel shelf; see Art Above Fireplace. A console table or sideboard follows the same two-thirds guideline as a sofa. In a hallway with no furniture, hang the center of the print about 57 inches from the floor. These are guidelines, so trust your eye in your own room.
Subjects and artists
Most prints here are landscapes: fields, rivers, mountain ranges and villages. Panoramic Landscape Wall Art gathers all of them. Highlights include Gustav Klimt's Island in the Attersee (about 1901 to 1902) and Alexander Helwig Wyant's Autumn in the Adirondacks. Koloman Moser painted Mountain Landscape at Sunset (View of the Rax) in 1913. For the sea, see Ivan Aivazovsky's Calm Sea (1887) and Alfred Thompson Bricher's Sails at Sunset. For bold color, try Wassily Kandinsky's Squares with Concentric Circles (1913). Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer's Still Life with Basket of Flowers dates from the 1690s. For these subjects in standard sizes, browse Vintage Landscape Paintings, Seascape Paintings, Abstract Wall Art and Vintage Floral Prints.
Frames and canvas
Each panoramic print comes in two formats. Gallery-wrapped canvas is stretched around solid wood bars and has a sawtooth hanger. Framed canvas sits in a floating frame in black, walnut or oak, and arrives with hanging wire. The canvas is thick and acid-free, with giclée printing rated for more than 100 years of fade resistance. Panoramic prints are not sold on paper. Black frames suit modern rooms and high-contrast art. Walnut and oak add warmth to landscapes and older paintings.
About the panoramic crop
Most of these paintings were not made in a 3:1 shape. Each panoramic print is a long crop of the painting. The crop is set to keep the main subject: the line of hills, the shore, the village. Almost every artwork here is also sold in its full standard shape. The product photo shows the exact crop.
